There are 30 pieces in a backgammon board game. The backgammon playing piece is somewhat similar to the checkers board game pieces and come in 2 colours, black and white. Large and smooth pieces are preferred most of the time, because they can be moved along the board easily. Initial positions of the pieces are the same for both backgammon players, much like how pieces are positioned for chess. They form a mirror pattern.
The black backgammon pieces are arranged as follows: 2 black pieces on point 24 of the board (opposing point 1 of the board where there are 2 white pieces), 5 black pieces on point 13 (opposite point 12 of the white pieces), 5 black pieces on point 6 (opposite point 19 of the white pieces) and 3 black pieces on point 8 of the board (opposite point 17 of the white pieces).
The white pieces mirror the position of the black ones and are arranged as follows: 2 white pieces on point 1 of the board, 5 white pieces on point 12, 5 white pieces on point 19 and 3 white pieces on point 17 of the board.
Finally, the dice and dice shakers complete the backgammon playing pieces. Ideally, each player should have their own set of dices, but to avoid bias, only one set of dice is used in most backgammon tournaments and games.
