Backgammon Rules of Play > Backgammon Terminology

Does your face go blank when you hear the words anchor, joker, bear off and pip count? You are so not alone. Backgammon terminology can get very intimidating and confusing, and there are so many of them to remember.

This article will discuss the most common backgammon terminology one should know. These are just the basics. You will find that as you continue to improve on your backgammon skills, you also learn the backgammon terminology by heart. But for now, here are the basic ones:

Anchor – This is when 2 or more chips are occupying any point within the inner board of your opponent

Joker – No, this is not Batman's nemesis. Joker is a lucky roll that affects a game's outcome in a person's favour

Bear off - To remove a checker from the board according to a roll of the dice after all of your checkers have been brought into your home board.

Pip Count - The total number of points that a player must move his checkers to bring them home and bear them off.

Blot - A single backgammon chip susceptible to attacks by the opponent.

Hit - To attack the blot of an opponent, the blot is then placed on the centre bar of the board.

Hit and Cover - To hit an opposing blot and then continue on with the same checker to cover your own blot.

There are many more jargon that a player should know in backgammon terminology. These are just the most commonly used and are "need to know" terms. In due time, you will be able to walk (and talk) like a professional backgammon player.
