About Backgammon
Backgammon rules evolved over the years. Gammon-Fortune.com lists the major backgammon regulations for your convenience.
Backgammon matches are played in designated backgammon tournament areas
Backgammon matches start on time
Every backgammon player is allowed one five minute break between backgammon games for backgammon matches 13 points in length or less. Backgammon matches 14 points or more are allowed more break time
Lateness is penalized with penalty points, the first penalty point is given 15 minutes after the scheduled start time, and accrues at the rate of one point for each five minute delay
A player forfeits the match, when they accrued half the amount of points necessary to win the backgammon match
Players are expected to play at a reasonable speed.
Directors may appoint a monitor to observe the backgammon match, or layer's request.
Monitors have complete powers to protect a player against an opponent's misdeeds in the backgammon game
To keep score, every player keep a running match score and compares their score with their opponent's at the launch of the backgammon game
In case there is a scoring dispute, a player not keeping score is at a disadvantage
The doubling cube begins each game centered with the "64" side face up
In case there is a dispute, the current position and level of the cube strongly sways the director's ruling
Gammons and backgammons will count at all times
To win a gammon or backgammon, it is not necessary to double an opponent
A backgammon player may double when it is their turn prior to rolling the dice, but not after rolling cocked dice
To double or redouble, the backgammon player moves their cube toward their adversary at the higher value and says "double"
To take, a backgammon player draws the cube toward them and says "take"
To reject the double, a backgammon player says "pass, then enters the score and resets the backgammon board
The cube should not be handled unwisely, because verbal or physical acts may be interpreted as cube actions
The Crawford Rule applies to all backgammon matches
When a backgammon player reaches match point (for example., 12 points in a 13 point match), the doubling cube will be out of play for one backgammon game
In the following backgammon games following the Crawford game, the cube may be turned at first permissible opportunity
Backgammon games must be rolled to conclusion, unless on of the following conditions apply:
Ended by a pass of a double or re-double
Conceded in no-contact positions as single game, gammon or backgammon losses
No game may be cancelled and replayed, or settled. Matches must be played to the appointed length.
