Backgammon tavla is the Turkish name for backgammon. It is very much like the Western backgammon game but not exactly the same. It is called Takhteh in Iran. The difference between tavla and backgammon is that the player who had rolled the higher die rerolls to make the first movement to open the game. Another difference is that the winner can only score 1 point for a normal win and 2 points for a gammon and there is no doubling cube. You cannot play a smaller number and use the rest of the pips to move a checker forward when bearing off in Tavla and there is no hit and run to cover your home board.
The setup and movement in backgammon tavla is the same as in regular backgammon where each player starts with 2 checkers on the opponent's 1-point, 5 checkers on the opponent's 12-point, 3 checkers on their own 8-point, and 5 checkers on their own 6-point. And as with the regular backgammon game, the first player to eliminate all of the 15 checkers is the winner of the game.
